Hi there, fellow IBS-C sufferers. Don’t we all know the problem of not fitting into any of your clothes when your IBS is flaring up? We have a few tips for you on IBS friendly clothing that are suitable, even when you’re feeling bloated. With these tips, you’ll never have to worry about not fitting into your regular clothes again.

Why does my IBS make me bloated?

First of all, it’s good to understand why you’re feeling bloated. If you have IBS-C, also known as Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation, times can occur when you cannot go to the bathroom for days or even weeks in a row. This is extremely painful and frustrating and can cause your stomach to start bloating. If you’re one of the unlucky IBS sufferers who ends up looking like they’re pregnant when they’re actually not – this can have an impact on your confidence. And outfit options, for that matter. So let’s have a look at clothing that is IBS and bloating friendly…

Bloating & IBS Friendly clothing

One of the most important things is to avoid wearing really tight clothing if you suffer from IBS-C. Whilst food and stress can be a huge trigger and can cause your stomach to bloat, clothing that is too tight around the stomach area can also cause this. Whilst we understand that wearing sport leggings everywhere you go isn’t always an option, we have a few alternatives for you. Have you ever heard about jeans with an elastic waistband? This will relieve the pressure of your stomach and will be so much more comfortable when you’re feeling bloated. You can find them literally anywhere, from Amazon to Next. A massive relief for those with IBS-C!

How To Wear Tight Clothing

Nothing feels worse than uncomfortable tight clothing, particularly when you feel bloated! Some bodycon options can feel really restrictive which can be made even worse if you’re IBS symptoms are playing up – sometimes, your clothes can even be painful! When it comes to purchasing IBS-friendly tops, dresses and even trousers, as a general rule of thumb, try to stay away from items of clothing that may leave marks on your skin. This can mean items of clothing are too tight. Also, pay attention to the actual material of the clothes. Having IBS doesn’t mean that you have to stay away from tight clothing altogether, but if you look at the material, test to see if it has given and will be kind to your stomach if you experience bloating.

Clothing For Special Occasions

When it comes to special occasions, especially if you’re going out for a heavy meal, sometimes picking out what to wear when you suffer from IBS can be a challenge. Looking for certain styles which can accommodate for extra bloating is a great way to ensure that you feel more comfortable throughout the day or evening, but you should also consider what items of clothing to wear as well. For example, jumpsuits, playsuits and even some dresses can be tricky to undone in a hurry or don’t make for the best option when it comes to rushing to the bathroom. Wearing something less ‘fussy’ but still party-ready, will have you feeling more confident and less worried about any IBS flare up during your evening out.

Understand what clothing works for your IBS

If you’re going shopping for clothes, it’s important to buy clothes that you feel comfortable in. Whether that’s a loose top, tight bodycon dress, or baggy mum jeans, whatever works best for you! We’re just here to help you out and give you any tips that might make life a bit easier. Floaty tops are an absolute must-have in our wardrobes and can easily be used to throw together an outfit if your IBS is flaring up. Pair it with your new jeans with the elastic waistband and you’re ready to go!

For more formal events, where you might want to wear a dress, we have found a couple of things to work for us. A-line dresses are usually a big hit and always make sure the dress isn’t very tight around the stomach area so it doesn’t add any pressure. Bodycon dresses can be great too as there isn’t a waistband pressing down on your stomach, however, once you’re feeling bloated it is very visible. But it’s about being comfortable above all because all bodies are beautiful. Especially your IBS body, so be kind to it!
